Inside a Spec Section

Most technical spec sections follow the same three-part format — learn it once and you can read any of them.

The three parts

  1. Part 1 — General: the scope, reference standards, submittals, quality requirements, and warranties.
  2. Part 2 — Products: the materials and products allowed — manufacturers, types, grades, and performance.
  3. Part 3 — Execution: how to install it — preparation, methods, tolerances, and inspection.

Use it

For your task: check Part 2 for what to buy and Part 3 for how to install it correctly.

Going Deeper (Intermediate)

Technical sections use a three-part format: Part 1 — General (scope, references, submittals, quality, warranty), Part 2 — Products (the materials/products allowed), Part 3 — Execution (how to install — prep, methods, tolerances). Learn it once, read any section.

Advanced / Pro-Level

Use each part for what it gives you:

Practice Challenge

Before installing, which part of the spec section tells you the allowable installation tolerances, and which tells you the approved product? (Answer: Part 3 — Execution gives installation methods and tolerances; Part 2 — Products gives the approved materials/manufacturers. Read Part 2 to buy the right product and Part 3 to install it to the required standard.)

In Practice

Installing flooring? Part 2 (Products) tells you the exact product and grade to buy; Part 3 (Execution) tells you the subfloor prep and tolerances. Skip Part 3 and you can install a great product the wrong way.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Takeaway: Every spec section has three parts — General, Products (what to buy), and Execution (how to install). Read Parts 2 and 3 for your task.
